Suvendu Adhikari was born on December 15, 1970 in Karkuli, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. He is son of Sisir Kumar Adhikari, a veteran politician and former Union Minister of State in the Manmohan Singh government.

Suvendu Adhikari was raised in a family deeply rooted in public service and his family is synonymous with Bengal’s political history. Growing up in the Medinipur region, Suvendu was witness to the intricacies of rural politics from a young age.

  • Graduation: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Pravat Kumar College(affiliated with Vidyasagar University), Contai.

Suvendu Adhikari: Career

Suvendu Adhikari's career has spanned over three decades, marked by a steady rise through various levels of governance. his rise in the Congress, his "architect" status in the TMC, and his current leadership in the BJP.

The Early Years (1995–2006)

He began his political journey with the Indian National Congress, winning his first election as a councillor for the Kanthi Municipality in 1995. In 2006, he was elected as MLA in  West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Contai South constituency.

The Nandigram Movement and TMC Ascent

Suvend Adhikari became a household name during the Nandigram anti-land acquisition movement (2007–2008). As the leader of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee, he successfully challenged the Left Front government, which played a decisive role in bringing Mamata Banerjee to power in 2011. He became a Member of Parliament and served two terms in the Lok Sabha representing Tamluk (2009–2016).

He served as State Minister between 2016 and 2020 where he held key portfolios, including Transport, Irrigation, and Water Resources. 

Transition to BJP and the 2021 Landmark Victory

In December 2020, citing ideological differences and the rising influence of "dynasty politics" within the TMC, Suvendu Adhikari joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).  In the 2021 State Assembly Election he won the Nandigram seat.

In the 2021 election was a historic moment, where Adhikari defeated sitting CM Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 1,956 votes, cementing his position as the BJP's face in Bengal." Following results he was appointed the Leader of the Opposition and also served as Leader of the West Bengal unit of Bharatiya Janata Party( BJP).
