Known as one of the greatest authors of literature across the world, Fyodor Dostoevsky is primarily revered for his in-depth examination of human psychology, morality and suffering. Born in Moscow in 1821, he had experienced both the comforts of wealth and the harshness of poverty throughout his early life.

However, the greatest political and personal tragedy of his life occurred when he was sentenced to exile and served time in a prison camp located in Siberia, which would have an incredibly transformative effect on how he viewed the world and subsequently, how he wrote about it.

Dostoevsky's most notable works include Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and Notes from Underground, each of which deal with important questions regarding guilt, faith, free will, and the internal battle of good versus evil.

In addition to being a master storyteller, he also questioned the nature of life and existence within what it means to be human. Today, Dostoevsky is still viewed as a brilliant thinker whose ideas have very much contributed to contemporary philosophy, literature, and psychology.

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s quotation means simply living or merely surviving isn't sufficient for meaningful existence.

Humanity isn’t intended to just exist day-to-day without any direction or motivation; rather, true meaning exists when we each find our own specific "something to live for" whether that "something" is in the form of love, learning, faith, being creative, or giving back to others.

Dostoevsky states meaning can only come from deep within who we are. Having no purpose makes our lives feel empty, even when all our basic needs have been met. Having a purpose makes our suffering easier to accept and process through other means.
