If you are tired of waiting for LPG cylinders to arrive or worried about the rising costs, switching to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) could be one of the smartest household decisions you make in 2026. And the good news? Households looking to move away from LPG cylinders can now apply for a piped natural gas connection online right from the comfort of their home. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is PNG Gas?
PNG stands for Piped Natural Gas. Unlike LPG, which comes in heavy cylinders, PNG is supplied directly to your kitchen through an underground pipeline. Once operational, PNG offers a continuous gas supply, with monthly billing based on usage which eliminates the need for cylinder refills
Why Is PNG Becoming Important Now?
In a major policy shift, the Centre has tightened rules around domestic gas usage, making it clear that households with PNG connections cannot continue using LPG cylinders alongside it. In simple terms, if PNG is available in your area, the government wants you to switch. Authorities are highlighting PNG's advantages, including uninterrupted supply through pipelines and freedom from repeated LPG cylinder refills.
How to Apply for PNG Connection Online?
Step 1: Find Your City's Gas Distributor
Each area is served by a designated City Gas Distribution company, authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board. Major operators include Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) for Delhi-NCR, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) for Mumbai, Gujarat Gas for cities like Ahmedabad and Surat, Adani Total Gas for Faridabad and parts of Uttar Pradesh, and GAIL Gas for Bengaluru and Patna.
Step 2: Visit the Official Website
Go to your respective distributor's official website.
Step 3: Register Online
On the homepage, look for "New Connection" or "Apply for PNG." Fill in your basic details name, address, contact number, and Aadhaar number. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification.
Step 4: Upload Required Documents
Keep the following documents ready in PDF or image format:
-
Aadhaar Card (identity + address proof)
-
Ownership proof: property papers or society NOC
-
Passport-size photograph
-
LPG surrender letter (if applicable)
Step 5: Pay the Security Deposit
One of the key costs involved is the security deposit. For instance, IGL charges a Rs 7,000 refundable security deposit for new connections, which includes up to 15 metres of pipeline. Similar deposit structures are followed by other CGD companies, though the exact amount can vary by city and provider.
Step 6: Site Inspection and Installation
After application and payment, the company conducts a site inspection to check feasibility. If approved, technicians install the pipeline connection and gas meter, followed by safety checks before supply begins.
Metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and parts of Gujarat have wider PNG coverage, while several Tier-2 cities and southern regions are still seeing the gradual rollout of pipeline infrastructure. If your area is covered, applying online is quick, paperless, and takes less than 20 minutes.
