David Warner has won the most number of orange caps in IPL, with three orange caps in 2015, 2017 and 2019. He is followed by Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli who have won two Orange Caps each. Virat Kohli is also the leading scorer in a single season with 973 runs in 2016.
The Orange Cap is a yearly cricket award which is presented to the top run-scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This award has been handed out since 2008 to the most consistent batsman of the tournament.
The History of the Orange Cap
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) created the Orange Cap in the first season of IPL in 2008. The first time the cap was worn was by Brendon McCullum after the first match. But Shaun Marsh was the winner of the award at the end of the tournament.
The cap is worn by the player with the most runs at fielding. The top player gets a trophy and money at the end of the last game. Very few players have consistently led the pack in this category.
A number of batters have been at the top of this list once, but only three have won it multiple times.
David Warner (3 Wins)
Warner is the most successful batter. He was awarded his first cap with 562 runs in 2015. Again in 2017 with 641 runs and 2019 with 692 runs. He won the award three times with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Chris Gayle (2 Wins)
The West Indian all-rounder was the first to win the award two years in a row. He was in scintillating form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2011 and 2012. Gayle is credited with revolutionising the opening overs of T20 cricket.
Virat Kohli (2 Wins)
Virat Kohli secured his second Orange Cap in 2024. He is the leader in the most productive season with 973 runs in 2016. He amassed 973 runs, including four hundreds. He once again led the table in 2024 with 741 runs.
Youngest to Win Orange Cap in IPL
Recently, we've seen the top run-scorers in IPL are getting younger. In 2023, Shubman Gill was awarded the title with 890 runs for the Gujarat Titans. In 2025, 23-year-old Sai Sudharsan became the youngest recipient ever. He had 759 runs in the season.
Winning the Cap and the Trophy
It is not common for the Orange Cap winner to win the IPL Trophy. There have only been two such instances. Robin Uthappa with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014. Ruturaj Gaikwad did it with Chennai Super Kings in 2021.
Who is the first Indian to win the Orange Cap?
The first Indian to win the award was Sachin Tendulkar. He did so in 2010, for Mumbai Indians. He had scored 618 runs that year.
