China has announced the cancellation of approximately 12,000 special degree programs at universities across the country as part of an overhaul of degree programs to enhance degree quality and enhance higher education’s ability to keep up with technological and labor-market changes due to artificial intelligence.

The shift is a sign of Beijing's two objectives: stricterning academic standards and reengineering the talent supply line for quickly changing industry requirements.

Many of the programmes that were already in place had low participation rates, were duplicated or were not relevant to the economic priorities, Chinese authorities report. The need for students with robust digital, data-science, engineering, and cross-disciplinary problem-solving skills has grown rapidly, thanks to the rapid advances in AI and automation.

How AI is reshaping curricula?

The phase-out must be handled responsibly by universities. Enrolled students in impacted programs should be provided with transfer options to related majors, completion options, and/or transfer to another institution as appropriate. Authorities have said they will not make any sudden expulsions and that the completion of degrees will be protected for those currently enrolled. Future students will be presented with fewer, but more focused choices, at university.

Apart from the cancellation of programs, the reform pushes for the universities to revise curricula to include AI literacy, data analysis, and interdisciplinary thinking.

Some skill gaps, however, may require retraining or short courses to close the skill gap; this is known as a transitional mismatch. Training programs are increasingly likely to be extended, new reskilling programs by employers to be increased, and internships and industry-university partnerships are expected to increase to provide students with hands-on experience.
