Which is the Largest Scorpion Ever to Roam the Earth?
Discover the name of the largest scorpion ever to roam the earth. Learn about its massive size, prehistoric habitat, and key fossil discoveries.
Praearcturus gigas is an ancient scorpion that was the largest to ever exist on earth. This ancient predator dates back to the Early Devonian, some 415 million years ago. Some studies have proven that the total length of this giant creature was approximately one meter (3.3 feet). This is the size of a medium-sized dog and is much bigger than any scorpion that exists today.
Largest Scorpion Ever on Earth: Key Facts at a Glance
Scientific Name: Praearcturus gigas

Pincer Size: More than 16 cm (6.3 in) long
Geological Era: Early Devonian period (around 415 million years ago)
Found in: United Kingdom (England and Wales)
Habitat: Shallow aquatic and transitional floodplain habitats
Diet: Carnivorous (eats early land invertebrates and small water life)
Who is the Biggest Scorpion that ever lived?
The scorpion Praearcturus gigas is the largest one ever to have lived on Earth. For decades, a different prehistoric species called Brontoscorpio anglicus was thought to be the largest. But a large-scale study by The University of Manchester and the Natural History Museum, London, re-evaluated these ancient remains. The scientists discovered that Brontoscorpio was not a new species, but a member of the species Praearcturus gigas.
This huge arachnid (group of spiders and scorpions) was a major predator of its time. The length of its pincers was more than 16 cm lo. Those claws are bigger than the body of most of today's scorpions.
To understand this, the largest living scorpion species on the planet, Giant Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus swammerdami now reclassified as Gigantometrus swammerdami) is around 23 cm long.
Where and When did this Giant Scorpion live?
It was a huge animal that existed 415 million years ago. This time is long before dinosaurs were there. It also preceded the development of the first large earth forests. On land at this time there were only small shrubs and fungi.
The fossils of this species were first dug up in the 1870s within the United Kingdom. The fossils were fragmentary and scientists initially thought the creature was a giant ancient crustacean. It was only with the advent of modern imaging technology that researchers were able to confirm it was indeed a true ancient scorpion.
How did it get so big?
The scorpion is thought to have grown to such a large size because there was little competition from other large land predators. There was not a clear distinction between land and water in those days. The animal probably hunted in shallow water, where it could readily carry its heavy body weight.
