GSTA Urges Delhi Government to Give NIOS Class 10 Students Equal Class 11 Admission Rights

The Government Schools Teacher's Association Delhi, has asked the Delhi government to remove what it has called unfair admission rules for students who passed Class 10 from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). In a letter sent to Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood on June 6, the association said that NIOS students should get the same chance to take admission in Class 11 as students from other recognised boards.

The teacher's body has raised concern over the present rules followed by the Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi. According to GSTA, these rules stop NIOS students from applying for Science and Commerce streams in government schools, even if they have scored well in important subjects.Scroll the article to get further details.

GSTA Says Current Rules Are Unfair

GSTA has strongly opposed the policy and said it creates discrimination against a group of students only because they studied through NIOS. The association said that even students with good marks in Mathematics and Science are not being allowed to choose Science or Commerce in Class 11. It also pointed out that restrictions are not limited to these two streams. In Humanities too, NIOS students must meet fixed percentage conditions and those who do not meet them are denied admission. The association believes this approach is unfair and goes against the idea of equal access to education. It said that students should be judged on merit and subject eligibility not on the mode of schooling they followed in Class 10.

NIOS Certificates Are Recognised Across India

GSTA also reminded the government that NIOS is a recognised institution under the Ministry of Education. Its certificates are treated as valid and equal to those issued by CBSE and other recognised boards. The association said that the Association of Indian Universities accepts NIOS qualifications for higher education admissions.

It further noted that NIOS students are also eligible for technical and professional education. According to the association bodies such as AICTE accept NIOS students for engineering and other professional courses. It also pointed out that students who complete Class 12 from NIOS can pursue MBBS if they meet the required rules. In this situation GSTA said stopping NIOS students from even entering Class 11 Science or Commerce in Delhi government schools appears contradictory.

Students From Weaker Backgrounds May Suffer More

The teachers’ association said that this policy affects many vulnerable students the most. These include children from poor families, working learners, sportspersons, artists, differently abled students and those who could not continue in regular schools due to personal, medical, social or financial reasons. For many such students NIOS is an important second chance at education.

What GSTA Has Demanded

The Government Schools Teachers Association has demanded that NIOS students who pass Class 10 should be allowed to apply for Science and Commerce on the basis of marks and subject suitability. It has also asked for the complete ban on their admission to these streams to be removed. Along with this the association also wants the minimum marks rule for Humanities to be relaxed and an official order to be issued clearly recognising NIOS certificates for school admissions. The association has also suggested that the Delhi government form a review committee to examine the current rules and remove provisions that harm NIOS students. GSTA says the government should adopt a fair and inclusive approach so that every student gets equal educational opportunity.
