How much water does AI use per prompt?
AI full form is 'Artificial Intelligence'. Some popular AI tools include ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, China's DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, X's Grok, and many more. The global AI market is rapidly accelerating. But did you know AI data centres often rely on water, and we are talking millions of litres per day? How much water does AI use for every prompt you use?
A 2026 report titled 'Environment Cost of AI's Energy Use' by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health warned that the water consumption by AI could equal that of as many as 1.3 billion people of Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. The study reveals some striking numbers.
The water footprint of GPT-5 training is estimated at 1 billion litres, the report noted. Meanwhile, the water consumption while training GPT-4 was about 600 million litres, which is enough to meet the minimum annual domestic water needs of 81,000 people in Sub-Saharan Africa or to fill 237 Olympic-sized pools, which are 50 metres long, 25 metres wide, and at least 2 metres (about 6.7 feet) deep.
Some popular AI tools include OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, China's DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, X's Grok, and many more. The global AI market is rapidly accelerating. Following its launch in 2022, ChatGPT surpassed 1 million users in 5 days and 100 million users in less than 2 months. Currently, ChatGPT processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts per day. But did you know the AI data centres often rely on water, and we are talking millions of litres per day?
How does AI use water?

Before breaking down the numbers for each AI tool, it is important to understand that the massive AI data centers consume water for cooling the servers. According to the OECD, AI data centres consume water in three ways:
(i) On-site server cooling wherein cooling towers are used to help dissipate the heat from the servers. AI chips produce extreme heat.
(ii) Off-site electricity generation for which huge amounts of water is used to power the servers of AI data centres.
(iii) Microchip Manufacturing: The specialised Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and microchips require a staggering volume of water to cool the machinery.
How much water does AI use per prompt?
Let us look at the water consumption for famous AI tools:
ChatGPT: About 500 ml or a water bottle for every 10 to 50 user prompts, as per UN reports and research studies.
Gemini: 0.26 ml of water or five drops per prompt, as per official Google blog.
Did you know? Research tells that AI Video generation can consume upto 4.1 litres and AI images can use about 29 ml of water.
What is AI?
The full form of AI is 'Artificial Intelligence'. These human-made systems are able to process information that emulates human cognition, ranging from reasoning and language understanding to problem-solving and decision-making.
With AI adoption accelerating, these models can analyse massive datasets in seconds, forecast climate trends, translate and communicate in your local language, revolutionise healthcare, and even self-drive cars.
