Ambedkar University Delhi has been witnessing a student protest that has now entered its seventh day. The protest is led by the All India Students Association and it started over demands linked to campus access and basic facilities and student representation. Students and the university administration are still in a standoff and no solution has been reached so far. The continuing protest has put campus access and student participation in university decisions and academic facilities at the centre of the dispute.
What the Ambedkar University Students Are Demanding?
Students have objected to the stricter checks at the university gates and to the internal barricading which they describe as restrictive. They want registered students to get free access inside the campus and they want the physical barriers that separate student areas from administrative areas to be removed.
Late on Friday the students alleged that security personnel did not allow food and water to be taken inside the campus for those sitting on an indefinite sit-in. AISA also claimed that a student collapsed during the night and that the movement of an ambulance and police vehicles was delayed.
The demands have now grown beyond the barricading issue. Students want the main gate reopened for students and they want the internal gates removed. Their other demands include restoration of the PhD fee waiver and withdrawal of the compulsory attendance rule for PhD scholars and scrapping of a July 31 circular that requires advance notice for public gatherings. They have also raised concerns about drinking water and classrooms and faculty availability and facilities for research scholars.
How the University Has Responded
The university has said that some areas such as the library and the computer laboratories were closed for maintenance and safety reasons and that the students were informed about this in advance. Its public relations office said the protest was being held outside the designated location and that it was affecting other academic activities.
The administration further alleged that some students manhandled security guards and it said the matter is already with the Delhi Police. It maintained that the security personnel were only performing their duties under standard protocols.
AUD has said that it remains in dialogue with the protesting students and that it has responded to the demands which it considers permissible and legitimate. AISA has meanwhile sought the intervention of civil society and rights organisations and it has called for accountability and direct negotiations with the university administration.
