Delhi University (DU) is struggling to prepare for the one-year MA program, even as the first batch of four-year undergraduate program (FYUP), launched under the National Education Policy (NEP), is set to graduate in May 2026. The lack of readiness, including lack of clarity on syllabus and seat availability, is causing anxiety among students who might have to choose between a two-year master's degree or waiting a year, possibly delaying their careers.
The National Education Policy (NEP) introduced a one-year master's option for students with a four-year undergraduate degree, but major universities in the capital are not yet ready to implement it. According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), at least 20 central universities have adopted the FYUP, however, the one-year MA is facing delays.
Syllabus not prepared at JNU
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has not yet created the syllabus or framework for the one-year MA, with faculty mentioning the difficulty of developing a new structure in a short notice.
DU has prepared the 1-year syllabus
Delhi University (DU) has launched a one-year MA, but is only admitting its own FYUP graduates this year, excluding students from other universities. DU says that running both one-year and two-year MA programs simultaneously is challenging with limited resources.
JMI to implement from 2026-27
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will start the one-year MA from the 2026-27 session. It is due to the fact that the FYUP was launched late, so the first batch is still in its third year.
Students are agitated that a policy meant to provide flexibility is instead causing uncertainty. If the one-year program isn't ready when postgraduate admissions begin in May, students' time and career plans will be negatively affected.
