A critical administrative logjam within the UK Home Office’s Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA) framework has triggered a widespread crisis across the UK higher education sector, directly impacting international student mobility.

With the current six-month delay in the administrative review process that is part of the UK's Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA), there is currently a huge blind spot created regarding compliance and its effects among students and education providers. The six-month delay involves a review process aimed at checking for compliance by sponsor license providers as they determine the capacity of a university or college to meet the Home Office's sponsorship requirements for international students.

While the BCA does not directly affect students, the repercussions will impact them indirectly. For example, the compliance review of an educational institution will likely result in a halt in visa sponsorship applications, issuance of Course of Study letters/CAS number, and the ability of existing students to get sponsored by their providers for future enrollments or extension of visa sponsorship.

Students who plan to move to a new course, renew their visas, or sponsor their dependants' visas might be impacted by the compliance review of their sponsoring providers.

What would be the Impact on International Student Mobility?

This delay undermines the UK's good standing concerning fast and efficient visa processes. As a result, the students' inability to obtain visa approval will cause missing deadlines related to registration, accommodation, etc., resulting in loss of money that cannot be refunded due to late payment penalties.

Students coming from South Asian, African, and other countries whose students are attracted by the UK because it is a preferred study location must be especially concerned.

What Students Can Do Now?

Affected students should approach their university's international student office right away to learn about how this issue influences their situation. Save all the documents you received from the Immigration Service; they include your visa application form, offer letter, CAS number, and proof of payment. In case your visa expires in the next three months, consult a regulated immigration adviser about potential solutions such as deferment of studies or another program
