The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to phase out postgraduate diploma medical courses across the country and replace them with broad specialty degree programmes such as MD and MS. According to the latest notification, the 2026-27 academic session will be the final year for admissions to PG diploma courses. From the 2027-28 academic year no new admissions will be allowed and these diploma programmes will stop functioning. The move is aimed at bringing more uniformity in postgraduate medical education and improving the quality and recognition of specialist training. Read the article to know more.

Medical Colleges Can Convert Diploma Seats into MD/MS Seats

The NMC said this step will help align medical qualifications with current academic standards while also allowing colleges to make better use of their existing faculty, infrastructure and clinical resources. The commission noted that many medical colleges currently run both diploma and degree programmes in the same specialty while some institutions still offer only diploma courses. It believes that several of these colleges already have the facilities needed to upgrade diploma seats into MD or MS degree seats.

To support the transition colleges that are running PG diploma courses will be allowed to apply for conversion into corresponding degree programmes. These applications will have to be submitted online to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). The NMC has said that a separate application module and detailed schedule for this process will be announced later.

The decision follows the Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023, which had already allowed medical colleges to seek conversion of diploma seats into degree seats. The regulations had also made it clear that no new proposals to start or increase diploma seats would be accepted. With this change, postgraduate specialist medical training in India will gradually move fully towards degree-based MD and MS courses.
