Rajasthan University PhD Admissions 2026 Put on Hold with Immediate Effect; Revised Interview Schedule Soon
Rajasthan University: The University of Rajasthan has put its RUPA-2026 PhD admissions and interviews on hold due to student protests. The suspension addresses a lack of category-wise candidate lists and seat matrices, which activists claim violates Ordinance 124 reservation rules. Revised schedules will be published on uniraj.ac.in.
Rajasthan University: The University of Rajasthan (Uniraj) has temporarily deferred their PhD admission procedures and interview schedules, as per the RUPA-2026 guidelines. As per the official letter sent to all department heads and center directors by Prof. S.K. Gupta, Convener of RU PhD Admissions, all departments have been instructed to temporarily suspend their planned interviews and also refrain from communicating any admission information till the time new instructions are made. The unprecedented decision was taken due to many representations received by the concerned student groups.
The main issues are the candidate lists announced for interviews starting from June 16 that did not have any bifurcations for different categories (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS). The student bodies, such as the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), claimed that having two times more candidates than the available number of seats for PhD admission without an explicit categorization in the public domain gives way to possible differences in choices. The university authorities will issue a new timetable with updated instructions and seat matrix separately through the official website portal uniraj.ac.in. Researchers should carefully check the server for the latest updates and avoid coming to the campus premises.
The Reason Behind the Sudden Postponement
Although the original official circular stated that the suspension is made "in view of representations received from students," the follow-up communications suggest that there are significant institutional issues raised by student unions and candidate groups:
-
Failure to Specify Reservations: The lists of candidates announced in interviews by the university did not specify category wise division of candidates (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS). Controversies Over Transparency: Even though departments conducted twice as many interviews as the total number of doctoral seats available, candidates argued that failure to provide category-wise seat allocations could lead to unfair selections.
-
Violation of Ordinance 124 Point 5.6: Activists contended that this constituted a violation of the obligatory point 5.6 of the Rajasthan University Ordinance 124.
