The National Council of Educational Research and Training, NCERT clarified that no mathematical topics were deleted from the draft Class 9 Maths syllabus. The statement addressed concerns from parents, students, and teachers who believed certain core topics had been completely removed from the curriculum. NCERT stated that concepts were not removed, instead they were rearranged and integrated across different chapters. The draft syllabus was created to gather feedback from teachers, students, and educators. NCERT and the Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE will release the final syllabus in October. Redistribution of Lines, Angles, and Geometry
NCERT explained how topics like 'Lines and Angles' and 'Euclidean Geometry' were reorganized:
- Lines and Angles: Basic concepts were already covered in Grade 6. Advanced applications were moved to Class 9 chapters dealing with 'Quadrilaterals' and 'Propositions'.
- Euclidean Geometry: Concepts involving flat two-dimensional geometry—such as circles, polygons, and intersecting lines—were distributed across Chapters 5, 6, 9, 12, and 13.
Based on educator feedback, NCERT decided against keeping a standalone abstract 'axiom-theorem-proof' chapter. Instead, students will learn these geometric principles as practical applications within broader topics.
Addition of Algorithms and Focus on AI
A key update in the Class 9 Mathematics draft syllabus is the introduction of a new chapter on algorithms. NCERT stated that the growth of Artificial Intelligence, AI makes it important for students to understand computational thinking, data structures, and running-time efficiency from a mathematical standpoint. While a separate AI module is being created, NCERT emphasized that foundational mathematical concepts supporting AI should be taught directly in mathematics classes.
Shift Toward Competency-Based Learning
Aligning with the National Education Policy, NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, NCERT warned against measuring a curriculum simply by counting textbook chapter titles. The updated curriculum prioritises "Curricular Goals, Competencies, and Learning Outcomes" to make sure practical, connected, and meaningful learning.
Schools, teachers, and examination boards were advised to design classroom activities and student assessments around these core competencies rather than relying strictly on traditional chapter divisions.
Draft Syllabus will be Finalised in October
NCERT also clarified that the current draft is not the final version. The council shared it to gather suggestions from teachers, students, parents, and educators. All feedback will be reviewed before finalizing the syllabus in October.
