India’s Infrastructure Revolution 2026: Check Key Vande Bharat, Bullet Trains, Expressways, Tunnel Routes; Travel Time Reduced to Minutes
Bridges have massively improved connectivity across rivers and rough terrain. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu, also known as the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, reduced travel between Rupai in Assam and Meka/Roing in Arunachal Pradesh from around six hours to one hour.
India’s broadening network of expressways, bridges, tunnels and faster trains is decreasing travel times across major routes. Projects charted to bypass geographical barriers, reduce detours and bolster rail speeds are putting several long-distance journeys within shorter travel spans. According to government data quoted in recent reports, the Delhi-Mumbai road journey is targeted to fall from about 33 hours to 12 hours, while Delhi-Katra travel is slated to reduce from 14 hours to six hours.
Bridges reduce long journeys
Bridges have massively improved connectivity across rivers and rough terrain. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu, also known as the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, reduced travel between Rupai in Assam and Meka/Roing in Arunachal Pradesh from around six hours to one hour.
The Bogibeel Bridge has lowered the travel time between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh to almost a day to around one to two hours. In Bihar, the Kosi Rail Mahasetu reduced the Nirmali-Saraigarh rail journey from about eight hours to 30 minutes, while cutting the rail distance from nearly 300 km to around 22 km.
Tunnels bypass difficult terrain
Mountain tunnels are also cutting down travel distances and offering more reliable connectivity. The 9.02-km Atal Tunnel bypasses the Rohtang Pass, cutting around 46 km from the route and saving approximately four to five hours.
The Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel has lowered the Jammu-Srinagar road distance by about 30 km and saves nearly two hours. The Banihal-Qazigund twin-tube tunnel saves around 1.5 hours, while the Sela Tunnel has reduced travel time on the Tezpur-Tawang route by more than an hour.
Expressways shorten road journeys
Access-controlled highways are causing major reductions on inter-city routes. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway has brought travel time down from around 2.5 hours to about 50 minutes. The Bengaluru-Mysuru route has dipped from nearly three hours to around 75 minutes.
Moreover, the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor has reduced journey time from more than six hours to about 2.5 hours. Meanwhile, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is aimed at reducing Delhi-Amritsar travel from eight hours to four hours, and Delhi-Katra travel from 14 hours to six hours. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is being constructed to bring the journey from roughly 33 hours to about 12 hours.
Vande Bharat adds speed to rail travel
Indian Railways is also reducing journey times by upgrading present services and launching faster trains. Under the 2026 timetable, 549 trains were boosted, with 20 getting at least an hour.
Bullet trains could cut travel time
The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is charted for an operational speed of 320 kmph and is slated to reduce the journey to about 1 hour 58 minutes. The corridor will have 12 stations and include a roughly 7-km undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek.
