In a significant development for nearly nine lakh students, the Karnataka government High Court has ruled that the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, KSEAB, must award marks for the Third Language in the SSLC examinations for the current academic year. The court set aside the government’s earlier move to shift to a grade-based system for this specific subject.
The decision comes after various stakeholders raised concerns that a grades-only policy for the Third Language would disadvantage students during competitive admissions, where even a single mark can alter merit rankings. By reverting to numerical marks, the court has ensured that the Third Language remains a part of the total aggregate score.
Karnataka High Court Ruling: Impact on Karnataka SSLC Result 2026
This ruling is expected to have a direct impact on the upcoming SSLC Result 2026. Previously, there was confusion regarding whether the total aggregate marks would be calculated out of 625 or a reduced 525 marks. With the High Court’s intervention, the traditional 625-mark system is likely to stay in place for this session, providing a clearer picture of student performance across all six subjects.
Education experts have welcomed the move, noting that a sudden shift to grading without a transitional period could have led to discrepancies in marks cards. The KSEAB is now expected to update its result processing software to reflect numerical values for the Third Language before the official result declaration.
