Good morning to our respected Principal, teachers, and fellow students.

I am honoured to deliver a speech today on a special occasion, which is known as World Earth Day 2026. This day is celebrated around the globe on the 22nd of April every year.

This year's theme is "Our Power, Our Planet." The meaning of this theme is that we, as humans, have all the power in our hands to save our planet Earth. We do not have to wait for any authorities to take action; each one of us can do our bit to save Earth.

Earth is our home. This planet Earth provides us with fresh air, clean water, food, and land to survive on. However, today our Earth is facing some serious issues. There is pollution in our environment. Trees are being cut in large numbers. Plastic is polluting our oceans. Due to climate change, there are floods and droughts everywhere.

As young students, we are the future of this planet. We have the duty to safeguard Mother Earth for the upcoming generation. Some of these steps are small yet effective ones. Plant a tree within your community. Refrain from using single-use plastic products. Conserve water and electricity in your homes. Take public transport or bike rather than travelling in a car. Educate others about these practices.

Small efforts will go a long way when millions join hands. Just as the theme of Earth Day 2026 states, we have the power to save our planet.

Today, I am proud and honoured to speak about one of the most important days celebrated all over the world, and that is World Earth Day 2026. Millions of people around the globe celebrate this special day each year on 22nd April, and this time, the theme of the day is 'Our Power, Our Planet' – a theme full of hope and responsibility.

What is Earth Day?

It is an international event celebrated each year on 22nd April. The celebration of this day started in 1970 when it was first observed on the same date in the United States of America. Earth Day was initiated by US Senator Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes, and on this particular day, over 20 million people took part in street demonstrations demanding environmental protection. Thanks to the massive turnout of people on that day, the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act came into existence. Till today, the event is celebrated by more than 1 billion people in over 193 countries.

State of Our Planet Right Now

Dear friends, allow me to give you some insight into how our planet fares right now. There have never been such major environmental threats in the history of mankind.

On average, about 10 million hectares of forest cover are lost annually. Our oceans are polluted by over 8 million metric tons of plastic on a yearly basis. Millions die due to air pollution each year. Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, and weather extremes are becoming increasingly common because of climate change. Species of flora and fauna are dying out faster than ever. Freshwater shortage occurs in many areas of the globe.

They are all just statistics, aren’t they? But they are actually alarms. Our planet needs help badly, and it is time to heed the call.

The theme chosen for Earth Day 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet”, and holds deep significance. This theme implies that changes in the environment cannot happen solely through government agencies or other big organisations; instead, such change starts with individuals like farmers, teachers, students, doctors, traders, etc., who take up the responsibility to be environmentally conscious every day.

What Can We Do?

Dear friends, saving the Earth doesn’t mean making big life changes. It means making small changes daily in life. Let’s discuss some of the important and easy things that each one of us can do:

• Tree plantation at home, in school, or in the community.
• Reducing the waste by following Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
• Avoiding single-use plastics and carrying reusable bags/bottles.
• Saving water by switching off the tap while using or repairing the leakages.
• Saving electricity by switching off the lights and fans.
• Using public transportation, cycling, and walking rather than driving a car.
• Increasing awareness amongst friends, families, and communities regarding environmental protection.
• Using renewable resources of energy like Solar and Wind Energy.
• But as students, we must play a bigger role. As students, we are the leaders of tomorrow. Today’s decisions will decide what kind of tomorrow will come. If we practice good habits today, then we will practice them for the rest of our lives.
