The Ministry of Education has rejected claims suggesting a decline in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking of Jawaharlal Nehru University, calling such reports “misleading” and factually incorrect. The clarification comes amid widespread discussion over the university’s recent ranking performance and concerns raised on social media and in sections of the media.

Officials stated that the confusion largely stems from incorrect comparisons made between different ranking categories under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), leading to a distorted perception of JNU’s performance.

Misinterpretation Behind the Controversy

The controversy emerged after reports claimed that JNU had dropped from rank 2 to rank 9. However, the Ministry clarified that this comparison is invalid as it mixes two separate categories “University” and “Overall” which are evaluated using different parameters.

According to officials, such comparisons are misleading because institutions are assessed differently in each category. The “University” category focuses specifically on universities, while the “Overall” category includes a broader pool of institutions such as IITs and other premier institutes.

JNU’s Consistent Performance

The Ministry emphasised that JNU has maintained a strong and consistent academic record. The university has secured the 2nd rank in the University category for five consecutive years from 2021 to 2025, demonstrating stability in its academic and research performance.

This consistency contradicts claims of any decline and reinforces JNU’s position as one of India’s leading higher education institutions.

Improvement in Overall Rankings

In addition to its stable performance in the University category, JNU has also shown progress in the Overall rankings. The university improved its position from 10th rank in 2024 to 9th rank in 2025, indicating a positive trajectory rather than a decline.

The Ministry highlighted that this improvement reflects enhanced performance across broader evaluation metrics, including teaching, learning resources, and research output.

Call for Accurate Reporting

The Ministry of Education cautioned against the spread of misleading narratives, stating that incorrect interpretation of ranking data can create confusion among students, parents, and academic stakeholders. It stressed the importance of understanding the methodology and categories of NIRF rankings before drawing conclusions.

The clarification issued by the Ministry makes it clear that Jawaharlal Nehru University has not experienced any decline in its NIRF rankings. Instead, it continues to hold a strong position in the University category while improving in the Overall rankings.

The episode highlights the need for careful analysis and responsible reporting of ranking data to ensure accurate public understanding of India’s higher education landscape.
