Types of Uranium

Types of Uranium: 

Uranium used in the several isotopes, each with different properties such as 

  • U-238: Uranium-238 is considered as more stable quality uranium with 99.3% of natural Uranium. It is not fissile( does not split easily), due to its fertile quality it can easily be converted into Plutonium in the nuclear reactors.

  • U-235: Uranium-235 is known as Energy Driver. In the U-235 only  0.7% of natural uranium was found. It is the only naturally occurring fissile isotope. It is an essential ingredient for nuclear power.

  • Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU): In U-235 the concentration of Uranium is 3% to 5% which is used in commercial nuclear power plants.

  • Depleted Uranium (DU): after the U-235 extraction  remaining material which  is highly dense and less radioactive than natural uranium. It is used  for industrial shielding.

Uses of Uranium

1. Low-Carbon Electricity Generation: use as fuel for nuclear power plants.

2. Environmental: it produces no carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide because it doesn't burn, considered as a cornerstone for "Net Zero" energy goals.

2. Medical Advancements: Uranium is the "parent" material for many medical isotopes(Radioistopes) used in hospitals worldwide:

  • Diagnostics: Isotopes like Technetium-99m help in creating detailed images of the heart, lungs, and bones.

  • Cancer Treatment: High-energy radiation derived from nuclear processes is used to target and shrink tumors.

3. Space Exploration: Uranium is essential for long-distance space missions.

Uranium’s Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) act as long-lasting batteries, and can provide heat and electricity to spacecraft for decades.

4. Industrial and Maritime Applications:

  •  Depleted Uranium (DU) is of heavy use in high density shielding such as shielding in hospitals to protect staff from X-rays and in containers used to transport radioactive materials.
