There are cricketers who reach the pinnacles of the game with years of patience, grinding out, getting opportunities, and waiting until your moment. And there are people who are not going to wait till someone gives them permission. Vaibhav Suryavanshi fits into the second category completely. He is a boy who came to IPL at the age of 14, hit his first ball and scored a six, breaking every single record which had ever been written in the history of Indian cricket.

Early Life and Education

Vaibhav Suryavanshi was born on 27 March 2011 in a small village called Tajpur, Bihar. His father, Sanjiv Sooryavanshi, was himself a budding cricketer who never reached professional levels. It was a choice made by Sanjiv when he realized the fire in his son's eyes and he left his business and became fully committed to establish Vaibhav’s career in cricket.

Despite financial limitations, Sanjiv sacrificed enormously, including selling a part of their family farm to fund Vaibhav’s training and travel costs.

At the age of eight, Vaibhav was enlisted at the GenNex Cricket Academy in Patna by Sanjiv and trained by coach Manish Ojha. The next thing was a challenging yet happy schedule: as the father and son commuted almost 100 kilometres on alternate days between Samastipur and Patna, to ensure that Vaibhav never missed a training session.

Vaibhav is now in school in Samastipur and managing his studies and strenuous practice in cricket.

The Struggles Behind the Success

There were no shortcuts, no star friendships and no sure way for Vaibhav. Sanjiv built resilience and helped Vaibhav to fulfill his dreams.

Vaibhav was also met with the age verification controversy. Doubts were raised over the authenticity of his official date of birth. His father Sanjiv later insisted in November 2024 that his official date of birth was valid and that when Vaibhav was 8.5 years old he had been checked and the BCCI had done a bone density test, and that Vaibhav has passed BCCI-mandated bone tests, which are essential in checking age.

The ESPN mentions: “At 13, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest to get an IPL deal when Rajasthan Royals (RR) bought him for INR 1.1 crore before IPL 2025.”

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Cricket Career

Vaibhav became the youngest Indian to play cricket in the modern era, and the fourth youngest ever, by age when he played first-class against Mumbai in January 2024.

He was the youngest cricketer to make his T20 debut, at the age of 13 years, when Bihar defeated Rajasthan in a match at the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, in November 2024. In December 2024, he was the youngest Indian to play List A cricket, when he made his debut in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, as the youngest player to play, making his debut at the age of 13 years and 269 days in a Bihar-Madhya Pradesh match.

Then there came the time when the whole country noticed him. Sooryavanshi became the youngest to debut in the IPL when on 19 April 2025, he played his first match in Royals against the Lucknow Super Giants at the age of 14 years and 23 days. On the first ball, which was bowled by Shardul Thakur, he struck a six. He then proceeded to hit a blistering 34 out of only 20 balls.

Career Breakthrough

On 28 April 2025, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi shocked the cricket world by hitting a 35-ball century, playing for Rajasthan Royals versus Gujarat Titans, and became the youngest cricketer to score a hundred in a T20 match. He went 101 off 38 balls.

The IPL website mentions: “There was more history in store for the teenager as he not only became the youngest debutant in the league’s history last season, but smashed 101 off 38 deliveries against Gujarat Titans to become the youngest centurion in men's T20 cricket. His hundred came off 35 deliveries, which is the second fastest in the IPL.”

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Quotes

  • “Hard work behind the scenes creates confidence on the field.”

  • “Talent opens the door, but discipline keeps you inside.”

  • “Every practice session is a step closer to your dream.”

  • “Cricket teaches patience before success.”

  • “Believe in your process, even when results take time.”

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is not just another young man who can strike a cricket ball. It is about a father selling his land so that his son can hold a bat. It is the tale of a mother that rose at 4 AM each morning to prepare meals prior to training. It is the tale of a 100 kilometre journey, over four years on alternate days, undertaken by an inhabitant of a rural village to a cricket academy in Patna. His journey shows that determination can turn around everything in your favour
