Atlanta, the most populous city of Georgia, has served as its capital since 1868.

The city got its name from the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which was the largest and reflected the increasing reputation of Atlanta as a top centre of transportation. 

Apart from its economic and transportation specifications, Atlanta serves as a moral hub by being the home city of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and housing the National Centre for Civil and Human Rights.

 Atlanta has historically served as a major transportation centre, also gaining its name for its reputation for the same. The city played a crucial role for the Confederacy during the  American Civil War. 

Post Civil War, the redesigned government decided to shift the capital from Milledgeville to Atlanta.

It has remained a critical transportation pivot with its Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport becoming the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic in 1998.
