Did you know that the foundation of India-UAE relations was laid much before the formation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India's independence? The centuries-old ties are rooted in trade and commerce, which began around the time of the Indus Valley Civilisation between 3300 BCE and 1300 BCE.

The currency of the two countries was also the same until 1973, when the Dirham replaced the Gulf Rupee (issued by the Reserve Bank of India) in the UAE. Also, India was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the UAE in 1972. Today, the UAE has over 3.5 million Indians.

India and the UAE created an air bubble arrangement during the COVID pandemic. India-UAE ties received new momentum after the 2015 visit of PM Narendra Modi to the UAE. Since then both countries have signed milestone agreements and pacts to further strengthen their bilateral ties.

India and the UAE enjoy a comprehensive strategic partnership dating back to the 1970s. Both countries, despite a few bottlenecks, enjoy strong geopolitical, economic and trade, energy, diaspora, security cooperation, and cultural respect.
