Students of Jamia Millia Islamia staged a demonstration on Thursday September 24, 2026 against eviction notices issued to three women hostellers. The students demanded that the notices be rolled back. University officials however called the allegations a case of misrepresentation. The protest was held inside the campus. Student Groups Demand Withdrawal of Eviction Notices
The protest was called by the All India Students’ Association which is also known as AISA. The call was shared by AIRSO, the Fraternity Movement MSF, NSUI, SFI and SIO. The demonstration took place at the JMI Central Canteen inside Gate Number 7. The student organisations said the notices were issued after women hostellers raised concerns about the quality of food and basic living conditions. The groups said the women had only asked for better food and better living conditions. AISA alleged that the university was targeting students who spoke about essential amenities instead of resolving their problems. The association demanded the immediate withdrawal of the eviction notices. It warned that the struggle would be intensified across the campus if these notices were not withdrawn.
Officials Say Hostel Rooms Are Given on Merit
A university official rejected the allegations and termed them misrepresentation. The official said the notices were linked to the prescribed eligibility requirements and were not an action against agitating students. The outcome of redressal cases of numerous students was released a couple of days ago. After that review three students were found ineligible to retain hostel accommodation. They had failed to secure the prescribed marks. The official said hostel rooms are given on the basis of merit as per the hostel manual. The three students did not meet the prescribed 55 per cent criteria. The official added that students can seek redressal and secure the required marks. The three students were allowed to stay for the past two months on sympathetic grounds. They continue to remain enrolled at the university.
