JEE NEET Merger: The Ministry of Education and NTA are evaluating major reforms, including a unified JEE-NEET computer-based exam, strict upper age limits, and attempt caps for NEET. While aimed at reducing student stress and optimization, the proposals face pushback over potential biases against rural students and "one bad day" exam risks.

JEE NEET Merger: The structural reforms that are likely to result in significant transformation within the higher education system in India are currently under consideration in the Ministry of Education as well as the NTA in relation to the competitive exams in India. The question of policy reform in relation to the implementation of a unified entrance exam process that would cover both the JEE and the NEET exam is one that has arisen, and so too the question of policy reform in relation to the qualification criteria of the NEET exams. Some of the policy options that have come into consideration in this regard include the matter of age limit and number of attempts.

The proposed restructuring seeks to mitigate the heavy psychological pressure exerted on students from handling concurrent national examinations, maximize the logistics infrastructure offered by the state government, and end the ever-present "drop-out" phenomenon prevalent in coaching centers. However, the suggested recommendations have ignited heated discussions within the student populace and even amongst coaches across the nation. The opposition believes that the one-layer system increases the probability of failing due to just having "one bad day" and is also highly prejudiced against students from rural areas that cannot afford quality coaching at an early age.

What Did The Officials Say?

The new integrated system aims at combining the testing process and reducing the massive logistical hurdles associated with testing. This new exam system will require all the candidates to go through a common baseline test, with those applying for engineering doing a different math test while those applying for medicine undertaking their biology test. Alongside this mega integration of tests, the government hopes to move away from the OMR and move into computer-based test.

In addition to the consolidation of test in a single platform, the government hopes to implement strict criteria in determining eligibility to write the exam as way of harmonizing the NEET system with other exams, such as the JEE Main. These include setting an upper limit on age for all candidates and number of times an individual can sit for NEET. At the moment, there is no upper age limit and number of attempts for NEET.

Although administrators think that limiting the number of attempts would lead students to pursue realistic alternatives such as B. Pharm or biotechnology, the coaching fraternity advises against such actions, as limiting the attempts may adversely affect poor students belonging to rural backgrounds and needing multiple attempts to overcome basic educational deficiencies.

With ongoing negotiations with the Ministry of Health and local state authorities, the proposal is in the preliminary stage; however, such decisions pave the way for the future of Indian admissions, where everything will be digitalized and standardized.

Current Position: The above proposals have not yet progressed beyond the stage of discussion and evaluation. There is no official announcement in the gazette regarding the implementation of the above changes in the coming academic sessions. Implementation of these policies will involve close coordination between state governments, medical councils, and other institutions.
