 S. Janaki was a legendary playback singer who passed away at the age of 88 on July 11, 2026. She is known as the 'Nightingale of South India'. Janaki captivated audiences for more than six decades with her soulful voice and versatility. 

She recorded over 48,000 songs in nearly 20 Indian languages, making her one of the most celebrated playback singers in Indian cinema. 

Who was S. Janaki?

Sistla Sreeramamurthy Janaki widely called S. Janaki or 'Janaki Amma'. She was born on 23 April 1938 in Pallapatla, Guntur (now in Andhra Pradesh). She was interested in the music from a young age. She gave her first stage performance at just nine years old.

She moved to Chennai in the late 1950s, making her professional playback debut in 1957. Over the subsequent 60 years. She became a towering figure in Indian cinema. 

She was celebrated for her emotive range and impeccable expression. Her peerless creative collaborations with industry greats such as composer Ilaiyaraaja and legendary co-singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam.

Why was S.Janaki called the ‘Nightingale of South India’? 

S. Janaki was awarded the moniker 'Nightingale of South India' due to her crystalline vocal tone, wide octave range and unparalleled vocal versatility. Her unique ability to effortlessly modulate her voice to fit characters of any age. She earned immense praise as the 'Queen of Expression'.

Her artistic contribution deeply bound the four southern film industries together. Although her mother tongue was Telugu. Kerala embraced her for her contributions to Malayalam cinema.

In Kerala she was affectionately referred to as the state's 'Dathu Puthri' (adopted daughter). 

This seamless cultural integration and massive emotional impact across regional borders cemented her status as the definitive voice of the South.

How many songs did she sing and in which languages?

S. Janaki's career spanned nearly seven decades.  Janaki recorded more than 48,000 songs. The majority of her discography resides in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Her linguistic fluency extended across the Indian subcontinent.

She successfully performed songs in approximately 20 languages including Hindi, Odia, Konkani, Tulu, Punjabi, Bengali and Urdu. She formally retired from recording and public performances in 2016 to step away and delivered her final concert in Mysuru in 2017.

National Film Awards

She won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer four times. 16 Vayathinile (Tamil, 1977), Oppol (Malayalam, 1981), Sitaara (Telugu, 1984) and Devar Magan (Tamil, 1992).

State Film Awards

She received an unprecedented 33 State Film Awards across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Civilian Honours

She was awarded the prestigious Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 2014. Notably, in 2013, she declined the Padma Bhushan (India's third-highest civilian award), stating the recognition came too late in her career and that her extensive contributions merited the country's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna.

Academic Honours

She was conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Mysore for her monumental contributions to cinema and arts.

S. Janaki leaves behind an enduring legacy that reshaped the landscapes of Indian playback singing. She did not merely sing lyrics. She also acted them through her microphone.

Janaki set a golden standard for vocal expression and precision that continues to inspire generations of aspiring musicians. Janaki’s humility, kindness and devotion to the craft transformed her into a revered matriarch of the music community.
