These districts are established so that the government can easily manage people, maintain the records of the land, keep the law and order in check and efficiently deliver the public services. 

Delhi’s official name is the National Capital Territory of Delhi and it is one of the most populated Union Territories in the country. The districts under Delhi are quite populated. However, some of them are quite small. Let’s understand which is the smallest district in Delhi by area. 

Which is the Smallest District in Delhi?

As per the Census 2011 data, the smallest district in Delhi is Central Delhi by area. The total area of Central Delhi is just 21 square kilometers. It is an urban urban district which means there is no rural population here.
Even being the smallest district by size, the Central Delhi district has a population density of 27,730 people per square kilometre. This makes it quite packed in comparison to other districts all over the country.

Delhi originally had 9 districts which was revised again in 2012 and the total reached to 11. Then in 2025 the Government of NCT of Delhi officially reorganized these into 13 districts through a gazette notification. However, the total change of area is not updated as per Census for the new 13-district structure. 

Central Delhi: Location and Boundaries

The location of Central Delhi is just located at the geographical heart of Delhi. It has a boundary of the Yamuna River in the East direction followed by North Delhi in the North direction and West Delhi and North West Delhi to the west. In the South direction New Delhi and South East Delhi are located. 

The district is divided into three subdivisions which are: 

  • Kotwali

  • Civil Lines

  • Karol Bagh

Central Delhi: Population

As per Census 2011, the total population of Central Delhi is 582320 and the density of population per square kilometers is 27730. The projected population by the Census of this area is 519,200. 

Central Delhi: Literacy Rate

Average literacy rate in Central Delhi district as per Census 2011 is 85.14 percent, of which males are 87.50 percent and females are 82.49 percent literate.
