NMC Approves 150 Additional MBBS Seats At Medical Colleges In Andhra Pradesh, Jammu And Kashmir From 2026-27
The NMC has approved the addition of 50 seats in Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and 100 seats in Andhra Pradesh's two medical colleges. The change, is in effect, starting from the current 2026-2027 academic year.
NMC Increases MBBS Seats: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has authorized the increase of 150 MBBS seats in medical colleges of Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar will now have additional 50 MBBS seats starting from the 2026-2027 session, while Andhra Pradesh will have an increase of 100 seats in its two government colleges.
50 More Seats At Government Medical College Srinagar
According to news agency PTI, the Health and Medical Education department announced that the NMC approved the increase of seats to strengthen the medical education and healthcare delivery system in Jammu and Kashmir. The GMC Srinagar college will now hold a total of 250 MBBS seats starting 2026-2027 academic year, an official told PTI on July 10, 2026 (Friday).
Under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC issued the Letter of Permission (LoP) for approval of an increase in 50 MBBS seats.
The spokesperson, to PTI, said last year, the GMC college in Srinagar had received an approval for an increase of 20 seats. According to him, the decision to add seats in the medical college follows a rigorous evaluation by MARB under the provisions of the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023.
The official added that this move will further strengthen the college’s positions as one of the premier medical colleges in India.
100 MBBS Seats Added In Two Andhra Pradesh Colleges
Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, on July 10, 2026 (Friday), said NMC has approved addition of 75 MBBS seats in Kadapa Government Medical College and 25 in Nellore ACSR Government Medical College, effective, starting from the 2026-2027 academic year.
"NMC issued the letter of permission for increasing MBBS seats by 75 in Kadapa Government Medical College and 25 in Nellore ACSR Government Medical College for the academic year 2026-27," Yadav was quoted in a press release as saying.
