The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has started the registration process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Eligible candidates can now submit the GATE 2027 application form online through the official GATE website and GOAPS portal. The registration window opened on September 2, 2026. 

Candidates should note that the last date to submit the GATE 2027 application form without a late fee is September 27, 2026. Those who miss the regular deadline will be able to apply with a late fee until October 5, 2026.

GATE 2027 will be conducted by IIT Madras. The examination will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, while the results are scheduled to be announced on March 19, 2027.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should check the eligibility requirements before submitting the application form. According to IIT Madras, students who are currently studying in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree programme or have already completed a government-approved degree in the specified disciplines can appear for GATE 2027.

Eligible academic backgrounds include:

  • Engineering and Technology
  • Architecture
  • Science
  • Commerce
  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Pharmacy
  • Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry
  • Other eligible programmes specified by the GATE 2027 authorities

For example, students pursuing a three-year B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. or BCA can appear if they are currently in the third year or have completed the degree. Students pursuing M.Sc., M.A. or MCA can also appear from the first year or after completing the programme.

GATE 2027 Registration Through DigiLocker

One of the important changes for GATE 2027 is that DigiLocker-based registration is mandatory for Indian nationals. During registration, details such as the candidate's name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, profile picture, address and verified ID information will be fetched from DigiLocker. 

Candidates should therefore ensure that their DigiLocker account is verified and updated before starting the application process. The name entered through the registration process should match the valid photo ID that the candidate will carry to the examination centre.

What is GATE 2027 Used For?

A valid GATE score can be used for admission to various Master's and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Humanities at eligible institutions.

GATE scores are also used by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment. Qualifying in GATE, however, does not automatically guarantee admission, scholarship or a PSU job. The final selection depends on the eligibility and selection rules of the respective institution or organisation.
