Who is the Founder of IndiGo?
In 2005, Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia established IndiGo as a private limited company. It was commissioned in July 2006 with its first plane and began operations in August 2006.
Rahul Bhatia is the business brain of IndiGo's success. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and established InterGlobe in 1989, specialising in Air Transport Management. Bhatia is known for maintaining a low profile despite running one of India's most successful aviation companies.
The IndiGo website mentions: “Rahul Bhatia is the Group Managing Director of InterGlobe Enterprises. He is also the Promoter and Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo), India's largest airline. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.”
“Rahul established InterGlobe in 1989 with its flagship business of Air Transport Management. With experience of over three decades in the travel industry, it is under his stewardship that InterGlobe has diversified its portfolio, which now includes Aviation (IndiGo), Hospitality, Logistics, Technology, Airline Management, Advanced Pilot Training and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering,” it adds.
Rakesh Gangwal brought in the aviation acumen. He has studied at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and did his MBA from Wharton School of Business. Rakesh has been in key aviation roles with companies like Boeing, Air France and Worldspan Technologies. However, he has taken a silent exit from the company’s board in 2022 and is currently selling his stock gradually.
The Forbes mentions: “Gangwal cofounded IndiGo, headquartered outside Delhi, with Rahul Bhatia (also a billionaire) in 2006 with one aircraft. The Miami resident resigned from the company's board in 2022 and said he would gradually sell his stock over the next five years.”
