Which is the Largest Cattle Fair in India?

The Sonepur Cattle Fair — also called Sonepur Mela or Harihar Kshetra Mela — is the largest cattle fair in India. Not just that, it is also the largest cattle fair in all of Asia.

This grand fair is held every year in Sonepur, a small town in Saran district, Bihar. It takes place at the meeting point of two holy rivers — the Ganga (Ganges) and the Gandak. The fair is held on the auspicious day of Kartik Poornima (the full moon night of the Hindu month of Kartik), which usually falls in November.

History of Sonepur Mela

The Sonepur Cattle Fair is not just old — it is ancient. It dates back to the time of Chandragupta Maurya, the first emperor of the Maurya Empire. He used to buy elephants and horses from this fair for his army. That means this fair is more than 2,000 years old.

The fair was originally held in Hajipur, but during the rule of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, it was moved to its current location in Sonepur.

There is also a famous Hindu mythological story connected to this fair. It is believed that Lord Vishnu saved an elephant (Gaj) from a crocodile (Grah) at this very spot. After the rescue, the elephant took a lotus flower and offered it to Lord Vishnu. This story is why the holy dip and the Hariharnath Temple are so important at this fair.
