Why Was the New Pamban Bridge Built?
The old Pamban Bridge was constructed in 1914 and had been functioning in India for over 100 years. Severe effects of the harsh sea environment have occurred over the years. Heavy corrosion resulted from salty air. The strong winds, rough seas and cyclones affected the structure. As of December 2022, the old bridge's lifting section was too weak and unsafe, and train operations were suspended indefinitely.
The new bridge was sanctioned by the Government of India in 2019. It has been built by the Navratna Public Sector Entity, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) under the Ministry of Railways. Development took place from September 2024 and the bridge was opened to traffic in April 2025.
