JoSAA Counselling 2026: The JEE Mains result has been released and the JoSAA Counselling 2026 is underway for admissions into the B.Tech programme in top government colleges. If your JEE Main rank is above 50,000, you may think that now admission to an NIT is out of reach. But that is not entirely true. As per the JoSAA 2025 data, several NITs had closing ranks well above 50,000 under the Other State (OS) quota in the General category. They are certain branches of NITs with lower demand.

NIT-Wise Cutoff Analysis for Ranks Above 50,000
Here is a closer look at each NIT and what branches are accessible for candidates with a rank above 50,000.
NIT Nagaland: NIT Nagaland is based in Dimapur. Electrical and Electronics Engineering had the lowest OS closing rank at 50,145. Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering closed at 53,110, Mechanical Engineering at 56,813, and Civil Engineering at 60,689. This NIT is one of the newer ones but has been consistently accepting students through JoSAA.
NIT Arunachal Pradesh: This NIT offers some of the highest closing ranks. Mechanical Engineering was closed at 50,560, Civil Engineering at 58,464, and Biosciences and Bioengineering at 61,897. Candidates with ranks between 50,000 and 62,000 can seriously consider this NIT, specially for Mechanical and Civil branches.
NIT Raipur: NIT Raipur in Chhattisgarh had multiple branches with closing ranks above 50,000 under OS quota. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering was closed at 50,773, Mining Engineering at 52,916, Biotechnology at 54,841, and Biomedical Engineering at 56,483. For candidates open to non-core branches, NIT Raipur is a strong option.
NIT Agartala: NIT Agartala in Tripura showed Chemical Engineering closing at 50,902, Civil Engineering at 54,950, and Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering at 59,122. NIT Agartala is one of the older NITs in the northeast and has decent placement activity for its size.
NIT Mizoram: NIT Mizoram had Electrical Engineering closing at 51,698, Mechanical Engineering at 55,295, Chemical Science and Technology at 57,895, and Civil Engineering at 61,620. It is located in Aizawl and is among the smaller NITs by student strength.
NIT Andhra Pradesh: NIT Andhra Pradesh, located in Tadepalligudem, showed Metallurgical and Materials Engineering was closed at 52,304, Civil Engineering at 52,976, and Bio Technology at 53,898 under OS quota. These are relatively accessible for candidates with ranks in the range of 52,000 and 54,000.
NIT Meghalaya: Civil Engineering at NIT Meghalaya was closed at 52,450 under OS quota in JoSAA 2025. NIT Meghalaya is located in Shillong and has a small batch size.
Dr BR Ambedkar NIT Jalandhar: This NIT had Textile Technology closing at 53,700 under OS quota. Jalandhar NIT is one of the older and more established NITs. Textile Technology is a specialised branch with niche career paths in textile and apparel manufacturing.
NIT Sikkim: Civil Engineering at NIT Sikkim was closed at 54,268 under OS quota. Located in Ravangla, South Sikkim, this is one of the smaller NITs but offers a peaceful campus environment.
NIT Srinagar: NIT Srinagar had Chemical Engineering closing at 55,299, Civil Engineering at 57,319, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at 57,881 under the OS quota. NIT Srinagar is located in Hazratbal, Srinagar and is one of the more established NITs in this list
