Parliamentary Panel Stresses Timely Release of Post-Matric Scholarships for Students

A parliamentary panel has urged the government to ensure the timely release of post-matric scholarships so that eligible students receive financial assistance within the same academic year. The recommendations were made in a recent report submitted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment. The committee noted that delays in scholarship disbursal can create financial difficulties for students who depend on these funds to continue their education. 

It stressed that scholarships meant for a particular academic year should be released during that same year to maximise their benefits for students.

Need for Timely Release of Scholarships

According to the committee, scholarship schemes play an important role in supporting students from economically weaker sections and enabling them to pursue higher education. However, delays in disbursal often reduce the effectiveness of these schemes.

• The panel recommended that the government streamline the process to ensure scholarships are distributed within the first few months of the academic session.

• Timely release of funds would help students manage their academic expenses, such as tuition fees, books, and other educational needs.

Panel Suggests Better Fund Utilisation

The report also highlighted concerns regarding the underutilisation of funds allocated for certain welfare schemes.

• The committee suggested that the concerned ministries take necessary steps to ensure that allocated funds are fully utilised so that maximum students benefit from the scholarship program.

• Additionally, the panel recommended reviewing the eligibility criteria and operation guidelines to improve the reach and efficiency of scholarship schemes.

These measures, according to the committee, would help strengthen financial support systems for students pursuing post-matric education.
