LPU Campus Unrest: Bihar CM Dials Founder Ashok Mittal Over Safety of State’s Students

LPU Campus Unrest: Amid rising unrest at Lovely Professional University (LPU), located at Phagwara, Punjab, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has contacted LPU’s Founder and Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal in connection with the security of the students hailing from Bihar studying at the institution. According to him, Mittal has assured him of full cooperation of the administration in connection with the security of the students. In his speech, the Chief Minister made it clear that the administration of the university has been instructed to take all possible steps to secure the interest of the students and save them from any kind of harm. 

The fierce campus unrest was triggered by certain allegations spread through various online media and social networking sites that an outsider sexually assaulted a female student at university premises, and even in connection with the death of one student. But these rumors are yet to be proved as false accusations have not been substantiated as of now. The LPU administration rejected the allegations terming them as baseless and false. On the other hand, local police filed an FIR against the unidentified person and formed a special investigation team (SIT).

LPU Campus Unrest: Overview of the Incident

• The Chief Minister of Bihar Samrat Choudhary has approached the founder of Lovely Professional University and the Member of Rajya Sabha Ashok Mittal in order to assess and improve the security measures for the students from Bihar who stay at the Phagwara campus of LPU in Punjab.

• High Level State Interventions: As per CM Samrat Choudhary, Ashok Mittal assured that he will give full support to the university for the safety of Bihari students who stay in the university campus.

• Background of Disturbance: There were disturbances in the Lovely Professional University due to social media rumors about sexual assault case. The university denied these false rumors and the Punjab police have set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for investigations.

• Safety Measures: The classes at LPU have been suspended for 10 days and the midterm exams have also been postponed so that the students can return safely to their homes. Those students who will stay back in the university can stay in the hostel rooms.
