Kerala state government will form an expert panel to update its vocational higher secondary courses in schools. The changes will be made in line with changing requirements. Kerala General Education Minister N Samsudheen, while speaking to the media, stated that several courses introduced in the Vocational Higher Secondary sector have become outdated, making the update a necessary change to strengthen the sector as per changing times.
As per media reports, the state government has initiated steps to strengthen vocational higher secondary education. The minister was speaking to the media at a foundation-laying ceremony for a new building and the inauguration of the Digital Square Lab at a vocational higher secondary school. He stated that education is undergoing major changes and the objective of the state education department is to equip children to compete.
The minister also added that students today have to compete with children from within the state and also across the world. Be it work or going abroad, students will find people from all parts of the world. Some jobs may even be online, and students of Kerala should have the information, knowledge and practical intelligence to compete with children from across the world.
He stated that strengthening the state's public education system and equipping school students to face competition is the objective of the government.
What is Vocational Education
Vocational education is being given heavy prominence by the central government as per the NEP 2020. Skill-based education is gaining prominence, and the curriculum is being updated across the country to equip students with skills, getting them ready for specific skill-based jobs. The programmes offered are of a shorter duration, covering wider areas. Vocational education equips students with job-ready skills for immediate workforce entry and also involves apprenticeships, traineeships, or internships with local employers.
Courses will be from prominent sectors delivered via polytechnics, community colleges, technical training institutes, and specialised trade schools. The updated courses will help bring changing technologies to students, equipping them for a better future through vocational courses.
