Who is the Father of Sociology?

Auguste Comte (1798-1857) is regarded as the "Father of Sociology. He was a French Philosopher who thought society was like nature and could be studied scientifically. Comte thought that there should be a proper science which would deal with human society, just as there is physics dealing with matter, and biology dealing with living things. That science was transformed to sociology.

Who Was Auguste Comte?

Auguste Comte was born in the year 1798 in France. As a result of his intellectual journey, he was led to the development of groundbreaking ideas on how human thought and society changes over time. He lived through a period of great turmoil in French history, following the French Revolution. There was a lack of unity in France, and a lack of ideologies.

Comte was strongly affected by this social climate. He envisioned a new science that could bring order, peace and progress for the society.

The Humanist Heritage mentions: “Auguste Comte was a French writer, philosopher, and social scientist, whose theory of positivism was a significant influence on the development of organised humanism. Comte’s ‘Religion of Humanity’, like humanism, removed supernatural sanction and motivation from ideas of human morality. Instead, it sought to place humanity and its achievements at the centre of social action, and introduced a kind of ‘secular worship’, found later in Stanton Coit’s ‘Ethical Church’. Though distinct and different from humanism, positivism’s three tenets (love, order, and progress) were influential on pioneering figures in the organised humanist movement, notably Frederick James Gould.”

How Did He Create Sociology?

He originally termed this new discipline "Social Physics". But another thinker already used the term so that is why Comte introduced a new one altogether. He came up with the word "sociology" in 1838, by combining the Latin word socius which means "companion, associate" with the Greek word logia meaning study of. In layman terms, sociology is defined as a study of human beings who are living together in a society.

The American Sociological Association mentions: “The term sociology was first used by Frenchman Auguste Compte in the 1830s when he proposed a synthetic science uniting all knowledge about human activity.  In the academic world, sociology is  considered one of the social sciences.”

What Was the Biggest Contribution of Auguste Comte?

Comte didn’t only name the subject. He provided it with a theory to support it. His primary contribution was the theory of positivism in which he asserted that society evolves in three distinct phases: theological, then metaphysical stage and then positive stage. In these stages, mankind progresses from superstition to scientific knowledge

The EBSCO mentions: “The Theory of Positivism, primarily developed by Auguste Comte in the 19th century, emphasizes a scientific approach to understanding social phenomena. Comte argued against speculative theories about humanity and instead advocated for observation and objective analysis as the foundation for knowledge. His framework is rooted in the idea of three historical stages of human understanding: theological, metaphysical, and positive, with the latter representing a reliance on scientific inquiry to uncover the laws governing society. Comte classified sciences in a hierarchy, placing sociology as the pinnacle, as it integrates insights from other disciplines.”

He also invented the term "altruism," which refers to putting other people first, and is now in common use.

A Sad but Interesting Ending

Here is the irony of his life. At the time of his demise in 1857 the discipline he had pioneered, had been discarded by the French universities. French academics did not embrace sociology again for almost 75 years. His ideas, however, attracted many supporters in England, and were soon spread throughout the world.

Today sociology is taught in all universities in India, whether it be Delhi or Chennai, Mumbai or Kolkata.

Why Does Auguste Comte Matter?

Every instance that a government conducts a survey to learn about the state of poverty, every instance that a researcher investigates why students drop out of school and every instance that someone asks the question, “why does society work this way?” is an unknowing use of the tools that Auguste Comte gave the world.

He believed that society was not random, but could be understood, studied and improved. It was the concept of one French Philosopher in the 1800s that continues to influence the understanding of human beings.
