The Missouri River has been an important historic route used by both explorers coming west through some of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition as well, and it is a sustainable resource due to its use by so many groups/industries such as pipelines, agriculture, transportation, and hydroelectric power.

Furthermore, the ecosystems surrounding the Missouri River are home to a large number of species; thus supporting both the economy and ecology for a large part of America.
