Where is Rubber Grown in Thailand?

The cultivation of rubber in Thailand began in the southern part of the country in the province of Trang and now it is cultivated in more than 3.5 million hectares.

The World Agroforestry mentions: “Rubber is one of Thailand's important economic crops. Latex rubber, raw rubber, and rubber wood are the country’s second highest revenue raising resource. Rubber trees were first cultivated in Sourthern Thailand in Kan Trang District, Trang Province, in 1899. Since its introduction rubber has spread across Thailand, first becoming an important crop of the Southern region, followed by the East, and now also in the Northeast and the North, respectively.”

The initial rubber tree planted in Thailand is still standing, and is a tourist attraction in Trang Province. The Amazing Thailand website mentions: “This tree, which is located along a road that leads to Kantang, represents the first group of rubber trees that Phraya Ratsadanupradit planted to pioneer Thailand's rubber plantation industry in 1899.”

What is India’s Position in Rubber Production?

India isn't far behind either. India now comfortably sits at the 5th position in rubber production. As per World Population Review, India produced about 843,000 tonnes of natural rubber in the year 2022.

How is Rubber Harvested?

Rubber isn't a product of a factory. Natural rubber is obtained from the rubber tree, which is a tall tropical tree from which latex is collected. They cut a small opening in the bark of the tree and milky milky white liquid known as latex slowly flows out into a small cup which the farmers collect. This is followed by processing it to rubber that is used daily.

Thailand's lead in the rubber industry comes from more than a century of cultivation, tropical climate and hard work of millions of farmers.
