States in India are often referred to by different names due to their geography, culture, or other natural characteristics, such as "The Land of Five Rivers" (Punjab) or states that are known for deserts (Rajasthan), mountains (Himachal Pradesh), or heritage (Madhya Pradesh).

However, one state has gained a reputation for being very green, clean, and sustainable as it has an extensive amount of forested area, eco-friendly practices, and great respect for nature resulting in a distinct name that represents its ecological identity.

While this name reflects the beauty of its landscape, it also shows that the state is actively engaged in conserving nature for future generations. Which state is designated with this ecological name?

Which State is called the Green State of India?

India consists of many different geographic areas from palm tree-drenched beaches to arid deserts to lush rain forests.

One of those states is Sikkim, which has earned the title of the “Green State of India” for its ability to preserve nature in an extraordinarily effective way.

Why is Sikkim called the Green State of India?

The Government of Sikkim’s commitment to preserving its environment has been remarkable. Approximately 50% of the land area of Sikkim has been made available as either a forested area or designated as environmentally important areas.

Therefore, Sikkim is one of the most environmentally diverse areas in the country of India and has consistently implemented strong environmental laws to protect its natural resources and wildlife, as well as its biodiversity.

India’s First Fully Organic State

Sikkim became the first completely organic state in India. In 2016, it declared itself fully organic after banning chemical fertilizer and pesticide use: this change encouraged farmers to use natural farming practices. This action will also help protect the state's environment and promote healthier food for consumers.

Sikkim has implemented several environmentally friendly initiatives; some of these include:

  • Plastic bags and single-use plastics are banned

  • Sustainable tourism is encouraged

  • Water resources and forests are conserved

  • Renewable energy use is encouraged

By engaging in these activities, Sikkim has drastically reduced its pollution levels, as well as maintained its natural beauty.
