A severe heatwave sweeping across India has disrupted the academic calendar in multiple states, prompting authorities to revise school timings, declare early holidays, and even shut institutions to protect students from extreme temperatures. With mercury levels crossing 44°C in several regions, administrations in cities like Delhi, Patna, Dehradun, Noida, and parts of Rajasthan have taken urgent measures to ensure student safety amid rising heat stress.

Patna Schools to Close Early Amid Rising Heat

In Bihar’s capital Patna, the district administration has directed that schools for Classes 1 to 8 will function only till 11:30 AM. The order, effective from April 27, aims to reduce children’s exposure to peak afternoon heat. Officials highlighted that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other health risks, especially among younger students.

Dehradun Orders Complete School Closure

In Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, authorities have gone a step further by ordering the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres due to the persistent heatwave. The directive applies to all classes (1 to 12) and both government and private institutions, reflecting the seriousness of the situation.

Delhi-NCR: Timings Revised, Safety Measures Introduced

While Delhi has not yet announced a blanket closure, several precautionary measures have been introduced:

  • Implementation of the Heat Action Plan 2026
  • Schools advised to provide ORS solutions to students
  • “Water bell” system to ensure regular hydration
  • Outdoor activities restricted during peak hours (11 AM – 4 PM)

In nearby Noida, schools have revised timings to 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM for all boards including CBSE and ICSE.

Other States Revise School Timings

Several states have shifted school hours to early mornings to avoid heat exposure:

  • Rajasthan (Sikar): 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Uttar Pradesh: 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Jharkhand: 7:00 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Maharashtra: 7:00 AM – 11:15 AM
  • Odisha: 6:30 AM – 10:30 AM

These changes are part of a broader effort to minimise outdoor exposure during peak heat hours.

Early Summer Vacations Announced in Several States

In addition to revised timings, many states have advanced summer vacations:

  • Odisha: Holidays from April 27
  • West Bengal: Vacations already started from April 22
  • Chhattisgarh: Summer break from April 20 to June 15
  • Tripura: Schools closed from April 24 to May 1
