Dr. G Madhavi Latha is an eminent civil engineer and geotechnical professional who was instrumental as a geotechnical consultant in the building of the Chenab Bridge, the world's tallest railway bridge situated in Jammu and Kashmir, India. She was involved for a period of 17 years, from the year 2005 until the bridge's completion in 2022, and hence is a major player behind this gargantuan engineering feat.
Education and Academic Background
- B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Andhra Pradesh, completed in 1992 with first-class distinction.
- M.Tech in Geotechnical Engineering from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, where she received a gold medal for academic achievements.
- Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in 2000.
- Post-doctoral studies in rock engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where she has been a faculty since 2003.
Dr. Madhavi Latha is currently a Higher Administrative Grade (HAG) professor at IISc in the Civil Engineering Department and chairs the Centre for Sustainable Technologies. She was also the first woman faculty member in the IISc Civil Engineering department, promoting inclusiveness and women's facilities on campus.

Madhavi Latha’s Role and Contributions to the Chenab Bridge Project
Chenab Bridge, which is part of the ambitious 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), is an engineering marvel 359 meters high above the Chenab River and 35 meters more than the Eiffel Tower in height. The project experienced unprecedented challenges posed by the complex geology of the area, fractured rock slopes, loose soil, the presence of seismic activity on frequent occasions, and inclement weather conditions.
Dr. Madhavi Latha's contributions were:
Offering professional geotechnical consultancy with Afcons, the lead contractor, with specific emphasis on slope stability and foundation safety in a tectonically active and geologically complicated region.
Advising on rock anchor, bolt, and retaining system design and installation to stabilize slopes and provide structural integrity to bridge foundations.
Pioneering the use of a "design-as-you-go" methodology, innovating on the fly to respond to unforeseen geological conditions like fractured rocks, concealed cavities, and different rock characteristics that are revealed during construction.
Writing a comprehensive paper entitled "Design as You Go: The Case Study of Chenab Railway Bridge" published in the Indian Geotechnical Journal, which documents the dynamic design process adapted to the site's geological realities.
As a project advisor during the construction, particularly after a co-advisor departed, providing continuity and technical precision up to the completion of the bridge in 2022.
Madhavi Latha: Achievements and Recognition
Madhavi Latha has received many awards for her research and contributions, such as:
- Prof. S.K. Chatterjee Outstanding Researcher Award at IISc.
- Woman Achiever Award by Karnataka Book of Records.
- SERB POWER Fellowship.
- Best Woman Researcher in Geotechnical Engineering by the Indian Geotechnical Society in 2021.
- Featured in the Top 75 Women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) in India in 2022.
Dr. G Madhavi Latha's tireless dedication and experience played a crucial role in overcoming the challenging geological and environmental conditions of the Chenab Bridge project to deliver one of the greatest civil engineering achievements in Indian history. Her professional life exemplifies geotechnical engineering excellence, path-breaking research, and female engineer advocacy.
