Early Life of Anandibai Joshi

Anandibai was born on 31 March 1865 in Kalyan, a small town near Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her birth name was Yamuna. She was born into a traditional Brahmin family.

At just 9 years of age, she was married to Gopalrao Joshi, a man much older than her. This was a common practice in India at the time. However, Gopalrao was different from most men of his era — he strongly believed in women's education and encouraged Anandibai to study.

Her Journey to America

Getting a medical degree in India was almost impossible for women at that time. So Anandibai decided to go to the United States to study medicine. This was a huge and bold step in the 1880s.

In 1883, she gave a public speech at Serampore College Hall. In that speech, she said:

"There is a growing need for Hindu lady doctors in India, and I volunteer to qualify myself for one."

This speech was heard by many, including American supporters who helped her reach the USA. She secured admission at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania — the world's first women's medical college.

The journey was not easy. When people in India heard she was going abroad, many threw stones and cow dung at her house. But she did not stop.

She graduated alongside Kei Okami (Japan) and Tabat Islambooly (Syria) — all three became the first women from their countries to earn a Western medical degree.

The Viceroy of India contributed Rs. 200 to fund her education, recognising the importance of her mission.
