Tamil Nadu Elections have always been a fight between regional political parties. Historically, two regional parties with many high-profile candidates have changed the nature of Tamil Nadu's government. For years now, the state has been about DMK vs AIADMK.

DMK and AIADMK have always functioned as the two dominant political parties in the state, and their rise to prominence has been linked to changing public sentiment about issues affecting the welfare of citizens, as well as intense competition between the two parties.

Tamil Nadu has had a long history of landslide victories that demonstrate a strong loyalty of voters toward the party they support and also demonstrate anti-incumbency tendencies.

The upcoming Tamil Nadu election may have a bigger impact on the political future of Tamil Nadu, as voters begin to place more importance on different issues, and as new relationships develop among many political parties.

1991 - AIADMK Alliance Victory

Jayalalithaa's political journey: From 1991-2016

With the assembly elections held in June 1991, the AIADMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu, headed by J. Jayalalithaa, won by a landslide, winning 225 of 234 seats, and producing one of the largest electoral mandates in the history of the state.

There was a tremendous wave of support for the AIADMK-Congress alliance after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi during the elections.

The 1991 election results in Tamil Nadu remain unique because of the scale of victory and the impact on Tamil Nadu's political history. They changed the landscape of politics in Tamil Nadu, established Jayalalithaa as the dominant political force in the state, and provided an example of how extraordinary events can impact voter decisions and create historic mandates.

1996 - DMK Alliance Victory

In the 1996 Assembly Elections, the DMK-led Alliance by M. Karunanidhi won a significant majority of the total Assembly seats available of 221.

The massive increase in the number of seats won by the DMK-led Alliance was influenced by the voters’ intense dissatisfaction with the incumbent AIADMK Government due to numerous allegations against the AIADMK, prompting the voters to provide an overwhelming number of votes to the DMK-led Alliance.

The final result of these elections represents one of the largest political mandates in Tamil Nadu’s history, as the AIADMK government was essentially rejected.

The election results not only solidified M. Karunanidhi’s leadership within the DMK but also re-established the DMK’s predominance in Tamil Nadu during this critical time frame.

In the 2011 Assembly Elections, the AIADMK-led Alliance by J. Jayalalithaa won a sweeping majority of the total Assembly seats available, 203, providing J. Jayalalithaa with a strong mandate.

Jayalalithaa’s well-designed campaign effectively communicated a message that resonated with many voters in Tamil Nadu, thus demonstrating that she received a significant majority of the votes.

The enormity of Jayalalithaa’s victory represented one of the largest victories in recent decades and further demonstrated that J. Jayalalithaa has been able to maintain strength within Tamil Nadu’s political arena.

1984 - AIADMK Alliance Victory

The AIADMK had a very important victory in the 1984 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) as its leader. MGR had difficulty campaigning due to health problems, but still had a tremendous amount of support from voters.

As a result, the alliance won approximately 195 of the total available seats in the Assembly. This was a clear sign of support from voters, who remained loyal to the AIADMK and provided the party with a strong and clear mandate.

The 1984 election helped create the political landscape of Tamil Nadu during the 1980's and established the AIADMK as a very significant and powerful party in the state.

1971 - DMK Alliance Victory

The DMK made a breakthrough in the 1971 provincial elections by winning more than 180 of the total available Assembly seats under the leadership of M. Karunanidhi (MK).

The DMK's victory came as the Dravidian movement was becoming increasingly prominent in Tamil Nadu. The result of this election strengthened the DMK's power in Tamil Nadu and expanded the influence of the DMK throughout the entire state, while at the same time, it made MK one of the most prominent political leaders in Tamil Nadu.

The election of 1971 marked the beginning of the Dravidian party's dominance in Tamil Nadu elections for many decades to come.
