Green Asha Tanker Crosses Strait of Hormuz Amid West Asia Tensions, Boosts India’s LPG Supply

Last Updated: Apr 5, 2026, 23:55 IST

India’s LPG tanker Green Asha successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz during regional tensions, highlighting ongoing efforts to secure energy supplies. Carrying essential fuel, the transit reflects diplomatic coordination and the strategic importance of this route, helping ease supply concerns and ensuring continuity in LPG availability for domestic consumption.

LPG tanker Green Asha of India manages to pass through Strait of Hormuz during West Asia tensions. This is a crucial step towards the importation of energy in the region of conflict.

The India-flagged LPG tanker Green Asha passed through the Strait of Hormuz, becoming the ninth such vessel to pass through since the start of the West Asia conflict. The mid-sized gas carrier of MOL India was carrying about 20000 tonnes of LPG that passed through Iranian waters around Larak island, Qeshm Island, and Hormuz Island, which is heavily controlled.

The trade sources added that it would be passed around April 4-5, 2026.

Green Asha Tanker

Green Asha (IMO: 9326598) was registered in 2006 in Mumbai, India, with gross tonnage of 23 000 and deadweight of 26 422 tonnes. It was constructed in 2007 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, and it has special notations of liquefied gas carriers (LGC 2G), and is under the management of MOL (India) Private Limited.

Its cargo capacity fits the low temperature LPG transportation that is essential in the domestic requirements in India.

The Strait of Hormuz, which is a crucial energy chokepoint, processes a large part of the Indian LPG imports, which can supply daily cooking fuel to millions of people. Iranian officials have introduced intense sea control measures since late February 2026 during the conflict, which has initially stranded several vessels.

The energy carriers such as LPG tankers featured in all nine successful transits highlighting the dependence of India on this route.

Government Response

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India liaised with Iran on safe passages, making possible safe passages such as Green Sanvi (46,650 tonnes LPG).

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal recorded six initial achievements, where negotiations are still underway to guarantee the free passage of LPG/ LNG cargoes. The Directorate General of Shipping oversees Indian-flagged vessels, with energy security being one of the priorities.

What Does It Mean?

This supply will also reduce supply worries because Green Asha will carry a load that can sustain the demand of LPG in India during disruptions. Earlier ships such as BW Tyr and BW Elm transported 94, 000 tonnes of cargo to ports such as Mumbai and Mangalore. The 17 ships in the queue earlier have been cleared by diplomatic efforts, which prevent shortages.
