Ayush Ministry Launches In-Flight Yoga Routine for Travellers

Last Updated: Mar 22, 2026, 12:06 IST

India has introduced a simple five-minute in-flight yoga routine to help passengers manage stress, improve circulation, and reduce fatigue during air travel. Designed for seated practice, the protocol promotes preventive healthcare and aims to make wellness a regular part of everyday activities, including long-haul journeys in confined cabin spaces.

The Ministry of Ayush has introduced a five minutes long yoga during Air travel Protocol which is also being termed as a smart in-flight yoga practice to enable passengers to control stress, tiredness, and circulation-related hazards during air travel.

The module targeting frequent flyers and long-haul passengers is intended to be practised in a seated airline-cabin setting and does not need any special equipment.

What was the Motive Behind Launch?

In-flight yoga has been introduced in the form of Yoga Mahotsav 2026, a nationwide yoga festival hosted by the Ministry of Ayush to facilitate yoga as a preventive-health and lifestyle activity.

The protocol was published by Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of state (Independent Charge) Ayush, who termed yoga as an effective means of preventive health and well-being, and stressed to bring yoga into a common environment, even in airplane cabins.

This introduction is a part of a wider agenda to incorporate yoga into the concrete and evidence-based regimens of health-promotion of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), work-based stresses and currently the travel-related discomforts.

Major Characteristics of The Yoga Protocol

The 5-minute routine has been created by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), which is an independent institute of the Ministry of Ayush and which is aimed at passengers irrespective of their age and fitness levels. The protocol incorporates gentle exercises, breathing exercises and brief meditation sessions that may be practiced on a regular economy seat.

As the official description says, it consists of:

  • Light joint-mobilisation exercises (shoulder rotations, ankle circles, stretching of neck and wrists).

  • Sitting and twisting spinal movements and gentle seated asanas to overcome the inability to sit too long.

  • Meditative breathing exercises, including Anulom Vilom (alternate-nostril breathing) and Bhramari (humming-bee breath) to lessen anxiety and enhance oxygenation.

  • A short centring or meditative session to achieve a state of mental relaxation during flight.

It is delivered in an easy, pictorial and video supported format to enable easy acceptance by the airlines, airports and passengers through the social-media and information-dissemination mediums of the Ministry.

What is Preventive-Care Rationality?

The Ministry notes that long-duration flights may have hours of immobility and that may cause stiffness and fatigue, poor circulation, and, in other instances, an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The protocol includes gentle movement and mindful breathing by incorporating these factors, to expound the blood flow, decrease muscle tension and minimise in-flight discomfort.

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, has said, that the introduction of yoga in the limited space of flights can effectively help in supporting:

  • Increased circulation and oxygenation.

  • Management of stress and anxiety.

  • General physical and mental health whilst travelling.

This program is described as a preventive-health intervention, which is consistent with the emphasis that the government has placed on affordable, convenient, wellness behaviour-based approaches in the face of disease.

What is the Policy and How is It Implemented?

The practice, informally known as the “Yoga to the Air Travel” or the In-Flight Yoga Protocol, is being marketed as a low-infrastructure, scalable, practice, capable of being built into a regular airline-safety briefing, in-flight audio-visual announcements or airport-wellness campaigns.

The Ministry has also stated that it would cooperate with the airlines, the airport authorities and yoga-training organisations to spread the protocol amongst a wider audience and persuade them to adopt it as an element of travel-wellness programs.

As Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Ms Monalisa Dash, has pointed out that the aim is to create micro wellness practices and cultivate a culture in which micro actions such as five minutes of in-flight yoga become the norm.
