To strengthen the human spaceflight program in India, ISRO launches Mission MITRA in Ladakh. This altitude analogue mission will recreate space-like conditions on the astronauts of the Gaganyaan mission, with its emphasis on team dynamics and performance.
Mission MITRA, which translates to Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment, will take place between April 2 and 9, 2026, in the Randhe area in Leh, Ladakh with an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters. It exposes astronaut-designates (Gaganyatris) and ground crews to hypoxia, extreme cold and isolation to simulate the conditions in space.
It is the first behavioral study of crewed missions to be inaugurated in India, and it was inaugurated by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan.
What are the goals of Mission MITRA?
Among the mission assessments are physiological, psychological and operational reactions, decision-making, communication, and stress resilience. The most important objectives are to learn how to interoperate and be flexible in harsh conditions between the crew and the ground teams. Experience will perfect training procedures, increasing the safety of long-duration flights in the future, not just Gaganyaan.

Ladakh as Testbed
The natural extremes of Leh, low oxygen and freezing temperature and remoteness are natural space analogues with no artificial setups. Conditions are similar to those in orbit or the lunar mission at 3,500 meters. These analogue experiments are common worldwide to pre-flight human performance checks.
What is the Connection to Gaganyaan Programme?
The results relate directly to Gaganyaan, the flagship human spaceflight program of India with the objective of low-Earth orbit crewed missions. The statistical information on stress management and teamwork will streamline the crew selection, operations and emergency response.
It takes the preceding tests such as parachute deployments and propulsion, and moves forward to uncrewed and manned flights.
Mission MITRA enhances Indian space aspirations as the world moves towards increased human exploration of space. Future missions such as the deep space missions could be informed by success by focusing on human factors that are not frequently considered in other technological developments.
