India’s First FRP Aluminium Unit: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated India's first state of the art Flat Rolled Products(FRP) aluminium plant marks a historic milestone in the nation's journey toward self-reliance in high-end manufacturing and creating new livelihood opportunities in the region. Plat is established by Hindalco Industries Limited at Lapanga in Sambalpur district of Odisha. It is a strategic asset designed to bolster India’s downstream aluminium capabilities and position Odisha as a global hub for metal processing.

What is the significance? 

The plant serves as an anchor for a growing industrial ecosystem, inviting smaller ancillary units to set up shop in the Sambalpur-Jharsuguda industrial complex. The establishment of an FRP unit in India addresses several critical gaps in the domestic supply chain:

1. By producing flat-rolled products locally, India reduces its dependency on foreign markets for specialized aluminium components and reduces the import dependency.

2. This facility provides the necessary raw materials for the "Make in India" initiative, specifically supporting the EV (Electric Vehicle), packaging, and construction industries.

3. Hindalco has integrated eco-friendly processes within the unit, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of aluminium processing through energy-efficient machinery.
