NEET UG 2026: Number of Government and Private MBBS Seats

To understand the number of NEET UG seats available at both government and pirate colleges, students have to look at the clear data. In 2026, India may have increased and have achieved elevated medical infrastructure, yet the seat availability still doesn't equate with heavy demand.

  • The total number of MBBS seats in India ranges from 1.25 to 1.3 lakh across all medical institutes.

  • Government vs. Private Seats: Of these, approximately 58,000 to 60,000 seats are in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), where tuition is subsidized. The remaining slots are at private medical colleges and deemed universities, where education costs substantially more.

  • Success Ratio: When the 26 lakh aspirants are compared to the about 60,000 government seats, the success percentage for a highly affordable medical education is at 2.3%. If we examine the total number of seats (including private), the possibility of becoming a doctor in India is around 5%.

Percentage of Students Enroll for MBBS

The qualifying percentage for NEET may vary depending on several factors, but it may goes around 50% to 55%. This means almost 13 lakh students are expected to clear the exam. However, qualifying does not guarantee the students eligibility during the counseling process so the numbers may change.

  1. Real Competition: While 26 lakh people apply, the serious battle for a government MBBS seat is among the top 1.5 to 2 lakh students who score higher than 600-620.

  2. Category-wise Impact: Reservation quotas have a significant impact on the number of candidates who acquire seats. For a General category student, the All India Quota (AIQ) final rankings for top-tier universities frequently fall between the first 20,000 to 25,000 positions.

  3. State Quota vs. All India Quota: 85% of seats are reserved under the State Quota, with competition varying by region. States like Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh have substantially higher cutoffs than others.

In conclusion, while the numbers may seem intense, the increase in medical colleges under the "One District, One Medical College" policy is helping to improve NEET success rate. Especially for the NEET UG 2026 aspirants, being in the top 1 percentile is important in securing MBBS seats in Indian medical institutes.
