Donald Trump's grip on the US is under pressure as early midterm results put Democrats ahead with massive margins thus putting Republican-held seats at risk, threatening to leave him facing an opposition-controlled Congress for his final two years in office.
As the United States midterm elections polling begins today, economic uncertainty, soaring living costs and dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's governance and Republicans have surfaced as key factors shaping, with recent opinion polls signalling a leverage for Democratic candidates.
The polls come in the backdrop of pressing concerns about the economy, healthcare expenses, immigration and the country's political direction.
Donald Trump's grip on the US is under pressure as early midterm results put Democrats ahead with massive margins thus putting Republican-held seats at risk, threatening to leave him facing an opposition-controlled Congress for his final two years in office.
Republicans pressently have a narrow 218-214 benefit in the House, with two openings, and a 53-47 majority in the Senate. The Democrats, meanwhile, require a net gain of four seats in either chamber to seize control. The newly elected lawmakers will join office in January 2027.
Can Trump be Impeached?
One of the largest personal and political issue for Donald Trump before the midterms elections 2026 is the issue of impeachment.
Trump has earlier been impeached twice during his first tenure as President. The first was in 2019 over allegations that he compelled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden.
The second was in 2021 over his role in the January 6 Capitol attack. He had been cleared both times due to the Republicans maintaining control of the Senate then.
A third impeachment could also be possible, if the Democrats secure control of the House of Representatives.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has said Democrats have neither ruled impeachment in nor rejected if they regain control of the House. However, party leaders have signalled that investigations and proofs should come first.
And even if the Democrats secure control of the Senate, any impeachment process would need a two-thirds majority to clear. In any case, should the Democrats come strongly, impeachment will be on prospects.
US Midterm Elections 2026 Opinion Poll and Survey
An NBC News survey stated that 75 per cent of respondents were dissatisfied with the national economy, while 51 per cent reported disappointment with their personal financial situation.
Although economic issues dominate both parties' priorities, Democratic and Republican voters vary on numerous crucial issues. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 88 per cent of Democratic supporters regarded the economy as very integral, compared with 82 per cent of Republicans.
Democratic voters massively emphasised healthcare and protecting democracy. Meanwhile, Republican supporters showcased critical concerns about immigration and violent crime.
The surveys also uncovered a deep divide over Trump's economic performance. Among Democratic respondents, 91 per cent said his economic policies had worsened economic conditions. Republican opinions were more divided, with 39 per cent said his policies had enhanced the economy.
Issues Dominating US Midterm Elections 2026
Another concern reported was soaring prices across party lines. Food, energy and healthcare costs have placed extra pressure on American homes. A Reuters/Ipsos survey noted that 71 per cent of Democrats and 57 per cent of Republicans felt that their incomes had failed to shield them from inflation.
Financial dissatisfaction has also crossed unprecedented levels. An NBC poll observed that 51 percent of registered voters were unhappy with their personal finances, thus becoming the first time in three decades of its polling that dissatisfaction extended satisfaction.
Thus, Voter enthusiasm favoured Democrats. A Marist survey stated that 91 percent of likely Democratic voters were enthusiastic about voting, compared with 86 percent of Republicans and 76 percent of independent voters.
Who Favours Democrats vs Republicans?
The final polling figures also suggest a Democratic benefit in the contest for congressional control. An NBC survey hinted that 52 percent of registered voters chose Democratic control of Congress, compared with 45 percent favouring Republicans. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll featured same trend.
However, national polling does not identify the result of individual congressional contest. The final results will be based on on voter turnout and contests across districts.
Will Donald Trump Resign If Democrats Win the 2026 US Midterm Elections? All Scenarios Explained
US President Donald Trump is unlikely to resign if Democrats defeat Republicans in the November 3 midterm elections and seize control of Congress. A Democratic victory would weaken his political impact but would not automatically remove him from office.
Democrats could begin investigations into his government, block key legislation and challenge his policies through congressional oversight. They could also implement impeachment process if they get a majority in the House of Representatives. However, removing Trump would need a two-thirds majority in the Senate.
Trump has reportedly prepared strategies to continue pursuing his agenda through executive powers like veto power, especially on immigration, trade and government spending. He remains steady to conclude his presidential term, which ends in January 2029.
