The race for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has taken a surprising leap, with the International Space Station (ISS) emerging as a potential contender alongside political leaders, humanitarian organisations and international institutions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is slated to declare this year’s awardees in Oslo on October 9.

The committee received 287 eligible nominations, consisting of 208 individuals and 79 organisations. However, the official list of nominees is kept hidden for 50 years. Consequently, names surfacing in expert analysis and public discussions should not be treated as final nominees.

Why the ISS Is Being Discussed

The ISS is being highlighted as a symbol of international cooperation at a time of growing geopolitical tensions. The orbiting laboratory has brought together astronauts and scientists from the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada.

According to Haakon Gjerløw, acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), the station presents a rare example of geopolitical rivals continuing to cooperate on a shared peaceful project. The ISS has remained persistently occupied since November 2000, making it one of the longest-running epitomes of international scientific cooperation.

Its potential recognition would therefore focus not on a single scientific achievement, but on the wider idea that countries with serious political disagreements can maintain cooperation in areas benefiting humanity.

Donald Trump in the Nobel Conversation

US President Donald Trump is also being discussed as a potential contender. Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, and reports say he has received nominations from several political figures.

However, experts quoted in recent reports have reviewed his chances as relatively low. The ongoing US-Israel-led conflict with Iran is among the factors complicating his prospects. The Nobel Committee's decision is also independent of public claims about nominations.

Other Contenders for Noble Peace Prize 2026

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has garnered attention after taking a firm position against Trump's tariff policies and advocating greater cooperation among countries.

His name has appeared in prediction markets and expert discussions, although there is no public confirmation that he is on the Nobel Committee's shortlist.

Moreover, Ukrain President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy and Pope Leo are also speculated to be contenders for the Nobel Peace Prize. The first US-born pope has spoken out on the war in West Asia on numerous occasions, resulting in him opposite US President Donald Trump.

Humanitarian and International Institutions

Numerous humanitarian organisations and institutions are also being discussed. These include Save the Children and Ukrainian children's advocate Mykola Kuleba, Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, and the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC) have also featured in expert predictions, showcasing the importance of international law and accountability in the present global environment.

October 9 Announcement for Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize remains one of the most closely watched awards because the committee can make unexpected choices. With the ISS, political leaders, humanitarian groups and international judicial institutions all being discussed, the 2026 race has an unusually broad field.
